The Spirit of Harriet Tubman
Within all of us exists the spirit of Harriet Tubman. In many instances, we rise to a challenge much
the same way as did Harriet Tubman when she was leading slaves through the treacherous Underground
Railroad. But, few men or women in history have risen to the level of achievement that was truly
exemplified by the sacrifice, life and spirit of Harriet Tubman.
In modern time, the historic March on Washington in 1963 and the Martin Luther King's 'I Have A
Dream' speech was one such moment in American and world history. Within the riveting moment in
time, on that hot summer afternoon that many
view as the defining moment not only for the
black American experience in seeking the ideals
of Freedom, but for persons seeking the "unalienable
rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"
throughout every town and hamlet in the world.
Martin Luther King's words echoed the Spirit of
Harriet Tubman when she had spoken over a
hundred and twenty five years earlier of 'reaching
the Promised Land of Canada' where all the slaves
were free. When Harriet Tubman was leading the
slaves to freedom and they all feared for their lives,
Harriet Tubman would start singing and her words
of song were as eloquent and meaningful as would Martin Luther King's be a Century and a quarter
later.

The Spirit of Harriet Tubman truly lives in all of us.
